Summary
On January 22, 1879 more than 4,000 Zulu warriors attacked a British military outpost at Rorke's Drift in South Africa. The regiment of 139 Welsh soldiers fought off the attack for over 18 hours until the Zulus called off the battle. Because of their remarkable bravery, eleven British soldiers received the coveted Victoria Cross
